Saifuddin claims mental health issues as the reason for his two-month cricket break

Bangladeshi all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin, 27, has disclosed that he is depressed and asked the BCB to exclude him from consideration for selection in any format of the game for a minimum of two months.

His depressive state has been linked, mainly, to missing the T20 World Cup this year and the current Global T20 Canada 2024, it has been reported.
He was unable to secure a visa in time, which prevented him from playing for the Montreal Tigers in the GT20 Canada, as a result of the ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh that has suspended all activities, including cricket.

In reference to past events, Saifuddin’s rib injury, which occurred during a workout on July 26, made his participation in the GT20 more difficult. According to a BCB medical committee official, Saifuddin’s injury prevented him from playing in the league since it would have been too dangerous for him to take a long journey while in such discomfort.

“Just before his travel, Saifuddin came to see us with a rib injury. We examined him and determined that it would be very dangerous for him to travel for 20–22 hours while in that much discomfort. He pulled his chest muscle during an exercise session, thus he arrived at the BCB the day before his planned trip on July 24. His discomfort did not go away after receiving first care, thus we decided not to let him play in the Global T20,” a BCB medical committee representative said.

The Bangladesh A squad will play three one-day matches and two four-day matches against Pakistan Shaheens in Islamabad starting on August 10, according to a statement released by the BCB on Wednesday. The current political unrest in Bangladesh forced the rescheduling of these matches.

Saifuddin was supposed to travel to Pakistan on August 11 with the A team, but the BCB had issued him a No Objection Certificate that was good until August 8.

The representative also said that Saifuddin was upset about missing the GT20 because, according to the official, his NOC was only valid until August 8 and not August 12, which would have prevented him from competing in the tournament’s Qualifier 1 and the match or matches that would have followed (depending on the outcome of Qualifier 1). Not only that, but selectors chose Tanzim Hasan Shakib over Saifuddin when choosing Bangladesh’s 15-man roster for the ICC T20 World Cup.

Regarding Saifuddin’s email correspondence with him, a member of the selection panel offered commentary.

“He expressed his emotional pain over missing the last World Cup and the Global T20 to me in an email on July 30, following the announcement of the A team. He asked for his letter to be taken favourably and for him to not be considered for any cricket matches for the following two months. “I noted that and mentioned that we should have a conversation when he gets back to Dhaka so that we can better understand his situation,” the agent said.

On August 17, Bangladesh will embark on a two-match Test series against Pakistan. The games will start on August 21 in Rawalpindi and on August 30 in Karachi.
