Watch: Saif Zaib is denied a wicket in the Vitality Blast 2024 after an umpire calls a rare no-ball; the video goes viral

In his third over of the night, Saif Zaib bowled a brilliantly flighted delivery outside off that had Tom Kohler-Cadmore completely fooled. Batters frequently recovered via no-balls, which were the result of bowlers stepping over the popping crease.

letting their backfoot cross the acceptable boundary of the return crease, or bowlers delivering the ball higher than waist height. But what happened in the first innings’ 14th over of the third Vitality Blast 2024 quarterfinal proved to be an unusual instance.

The stumper cannot be standing in front of the line of the stumps or have any part of their body or gloves ahead of the stumps when the bowler Saif Zaib

Lewis McManus quickly finished the honours by whipping off the bails. The judgement was forwarded to the third umpire for verification, since Northamptonshire appeared certain that they would get the danger man.

They were to be surprised, though, as the wicketkeeper’s gloves were unusually forward of the line of the stumps when he received the ball and stumped the batsman. However, the hitter appeared to have quickly brought his backfoot inside the crease. The on-field umpire was told to declare the game a “no-ball” by TV umpire David Millns, who quickly assessed the incident after asking the production team to rewind and fast-forward a few frames that were provided to him.

Not one to pass up the perfect opportunity for a free hit, Tom Kohler-Cadmore crushed the next delivery past the cow-corner barrier. Because of this, Northamptonshire ultimately paid a high price for the wicketkeeper’s error.

What regulations apply to stumping and wicketkeeping in cricket?

Delivers the ball, as per law 27.3 of the Marylebone Cricket Club, the organisation that oversees the laws governing the game. The umpire may declare a ball to be out of play if the wicketkeeper does this and it impacts the play. There are two available provisions under ordinary laws.

“The wicket-keeper shall remain wholly behind the wicket at the striker’s end from the moment the ball comes into play until a ball delivered by the bowler touches the bat or person of the striker or passes the wicket at the striker’s end or the striker attempts a run,” reads law 27.3.1 of the MCC.

“In the event of the wicket-keeper contravening this Law, the striker’s end umpire shall call and signal No ball as soon as applicable after the delivery of the ball,” the law 27.3.2 further states.

Interestingly, in terms of international cricket, Uma Chetry was denied her maiden dismissal on her debut due to exactly what happened with McManus during the second Twenty20 International between India Women and South Africa Women.
