The ODI World Cup, which will start on October 5, will have Sachin Tendulkar as its international ambassador.
The 50-year-old has played cricket internationally for 24 years and holds numerous records. He is regarded as one of the all-time greats in cricket and took home the coveted global championship in 2011 after India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the championship game.
The Mumbai-born cricketer spoke candidly about his life after being given the honor, recalling how he first served as the ball boy during the 1987 World Cup before going on to play for his nation in six World Cups. The former cricket player continued by expressing his excitement for the impending World Cup, noting how big events like these frequently inspire young people to dream.
“World Cups have always held a particular place in my heart, from serving as a ball boy in 1987 to representing the nation in six editions. The World Cup victory in 2011 is the cricketing achievement I’m most proud of. I am eagerly anticipating the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which will be held in India, with so many special teams and players ready to compete fiercely.
“Marquee events like the World Cup seed dreams in young minds, and I hope this edition too inspires young girls and boys to pick up sports and represent their countries at the highest level,” Sachin Tendulkar was cited as saying by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Along with Sachin, other ICC ambassadors for the competition include Vivian Richards, AB de Villiers, Eoin Morgan, Aaron Finch, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ross Taylor, Suresh Raina, Mithali Raj, and Mohammad Hafeez. Throughout the competition, they will engage with the fans and use several meet-and-greet opportunities to improve the spectator experience. In the media zone, they will also be disseminating expert analysis.
