Sunday, January 7, 2024: The SA20 is still the largest reward in South African cricket, with R70 million (about INR 31.15 crore) in total prize money up for grabs for Season 2.
A whopping R34 million (around INR 15.13 crore) will be awarded to the competition’s winners, who will be announced at Newlands on February 10. The prize money will be split as follows: the runners-up will get R16.25 million (approximately INR 7.23 crore), while the third and fourth places will get R8.9 million (approximately INR 3.96 crore) and R7.85 million (approximately INR 3.47 crore), respectively. Additionally, the prizes for fifth and sixth place are R2.5 million (about INR 1.1 crore) and R2.0 million (about INR 89 lakh), respectively.
With people pouring through the turnstiles at all six of the country’s stadiums, the inaugural SA20 was an unheard-of success. In addition to excellent T20 cricket, spectators enjoyed unmatched entertainment. Playing in front of full stadiums invigorated the players, no doubt, and they improved their performances. Aiden Markram, the captain of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, was the top performer and won the Player of the Season Award in the first season.
With R350 000 in prize money set aside for the Player of the Season, there is significant motivation to emulate Markram. Jos Buttler of the Paarl Royals was named the season’s top batsman, while Roelof van der Merwe of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape was named the season’s best bowler. A prize of R200,000 will be given out for each of these awards.
In addition to making the competition more intense, the addition of the “Rookie” for Season 2 will increase the prize of R100,0000 awarded to the Rising Star of the Season winner. Eathan Bosch, an all-rounder with the Pretoria Capitals, is the current champion following Season 1.
SA20 Season 2 begins on January 10 at St George’s Park with a match between the Johannesburg Super Kings and the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, the reigning champions.
