SA20 2024: At Newlands, Durban's Super Giants resume their winning ways
Wednesday, January 24, 2024: On Tuesday night at Newlands, in a pivotal SA20 encounter against MI Cape Town (MICT), Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) got back to winning ways.

After losing their next two games, DSG recovered with a 36-run bonus-point win to take back second place with 18 points. After local youngster and left-arm spinner George Linde (2/15) reduced DSG to 23/2 in the third over, the visitors were put in to bat and first struggled.

DSG rookie Tony de Zorzi was among Linde’s victims. He quickly reached 20 off 11 balls (3×4, 1×6), attempted a mistimed reverse sweep, and then clean bowled Quinton de Kock the very next delivery.

Then, a 43-run combination between Matthew Breetzke (48) and Jon Jon Smuts (26), helped DSG rebuild their innings. However, the visitors’ momentum was halted by a twin blow delivered by wrist-spinner Thomas Kaber (2/20), who claimed the wickets of JJ Smuts and the hazardous Heinrich Klaasen.

Wiaan Mulder had to score 38 runs off of 20 balls in order to get DSG to 157/6. MICT lost wickets frequently, therefore they were never in control of their run chase. Throughout, there were few partnerships; the only one that gave the Newlands supporters any optimism was the 48-run partnership between Sam Curran (38), and Dewald Brevis (21), for the fourth wicket.

With MICT limited to 121/9, it was DSG’s two new recruits, Noor Ahmad (3/22) and Marcus Stoinis (3/18), who caused the damage. Before their next crucial away game against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at St George’s Park on Saturday, MICT will have a lengthy rest.
