Retention rule change opens the door for 'uncapped' MS Dhoni in IPL

In the Indian Premier League, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is inextricably linked to the Chennai Super Kings. Before retiring before of the 2024 season, the seasoned leader captained the team for fifteen years. After he announced his resignation, there was no shortage of conjecture about him playing in the 2025 Indian Premier League. After that, in order to keep MS Dhoni on the team, the four-player retention criteria required that developed youngsters be waived off.

CSK needed only two things to happen in order to have a win-win scenario. In order for Dhoni to blend in with the favored players, BCCI had to implement the uncapped player rule. Notably, BCCI announced the revised retention policy in advance of the IPL 2025 super auctions. A franchise is permitted to keep up to six players, according to the board. There are two international players, one uncapped player, and three Indian players.

It is noteworthy that even though the former captain of India withdrew from international cricket in 2020, he can still be listed as uncapped. Dhoni will receive four crore rupees if CSK choose to keep him under this arrangement, as opposed to the twelve crore he was required to receive before the 2022 auctions. According to the uncapped player rule,

“If an Indian player who has been capped does not have a central contract with the BCCI or has not featured in the starting XI of an international cricket match in the five calendar years prior to the relevant season, then the player will lose their cap. This will only apply to players who are Indian.”

“We need to watch what choices they make about player retention, etc. The ball is not in our court right now. In light of this, I will answer calls once the rules and regulations are formalized, but it must be in the team’s best interest, Dhoni had previously stated of his possible return.
