For the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2025 Indian Premier League, Venkatesh Iyer‘s involvement has been a major question. This season, the batting all-rounder has not been reliable and has fallen short of the INR 23.75 crore price tag that he was purchased for at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Many commentators have criticised KKR’s auction strategy for spending so much money on Iyer because he has only scored 135 runs at an average of 22.50 in the eight games he has played thus far. The left-handed batsman should be batting higher in the competition and need more time at the crease, according to RP Singh, one of the experts who has shared his thoughts on the subject. He also pointed out that the squad made a grave error by firing Shreyas Iyer, who had guided them to their third championship the previous season.
“KKR has made significant investments in Venkatesh Iyer. There’s been plenty of time for him. Allow him to serve as an introductory speaker. You must consider whether a player will be our star player or a candidate for captaincy when you add him to your squad in such a large auction. However, neither of those items is present. I believe that the management of KKR has erred. Someone would undoubtedly choose your greatest captain (Shreyas Iyer) if you left him at the auction table, and he’s currently leading PBKS with distinction,” Singh said in an exclusive interview with JioHotstar.
“I don’t believe it will be prudent to fire Iyer at this time. He’s been given several matches by you. Giving a good player more games is the only way to get him back to his previous level of play. He can be thinking about the money that was provided to him to join the squad. “Why can’t I turn my team into a champion when I’ve been given so much money?” The 2007 T20 World Champion came to the conclusion that there was too much pressure.
At Eden Gardens, KKR hopes to defeat PBKS for the second time.
Speaking of the forthcoming game, KKR will take on the Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 26. The two teams will play each other for the second time. The Knight Riders won the first meeting after a low-scoring contest in which they ultimately defended 111 runs.
