Why discuss Rohit Sharma's retirement? He just secured a World Cup victory: Sourav Ganguly

Rohit Sharma’s potential retirement from ODI cricket following the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has been vehemently rejected by former India skipper Sourav Ganguly. After India’s 2024 T20 World Cup campaign won the championship, Sharma, 37, declared he was retiring from T20Is. It has been suggested that he may take a backseat to let the younger players take over, especially since the next ODI World Cup is still two years away.

According to PTI sources, after the tournament concludes, Rohit and head selector Ajit Agarkar are anticipated to discuss his future in ODI cricket. Furthermore, vice captain Shubman Gill said that Rohit would make a decision about his future in the format after the tournament, ahead of the Champions Trophy final.

That being said, Ganguly was adamantly against Rohit leaving ODIs. Speaking to the media on Saturday, the former BCCI president questioned why, while Rohit was still playing at his best, retirement talks were even happening.

“Why is Rohit Sharma’s retirement being discussed? Why even ask this question? Only a few months ago, he won the World Cup.

“Rohit Sharma is playing really well, and I’m not sure what the selectors are thinking,” Ganguly said.

Ganguly highlighted India’s flawless recent record to shed some light on their present domination in international cricket. “Compared to New Zealand, India is significantly superior. They won the 2024 T20 World Cup, participated in the 2023 World Cup final, and went undefeated in this Champions Trophy. He went on, “The same team will play.

Ganguly supported India as the overwhelming favourites when discussing their chances in the championship match. “The favourite is India. The team is playing well. KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli are all playing well. India has a potent bowling lineup. The match will be favourable. He declared, “Anyone can win; anyone can lose.”

Rohit will only become the third captain in Indian history to win the Champions Trophy, behind MS Dhoni (2013) and Ganguly (2002), if he guides India to victory on Sunday.
