“It’s not just about individual success in cricket.” This remark, if there is one, perfectly captures Rohit Sharma’s leadership style. The former captain of the Mumbai Indians has also gained the reputation of being a “selfless” captain due to his altered batting strategy, which places less value on milestones.
In a YouTube video, Rohit Sharma stated, “I have never set a goal to score a specific number of runs in a season.”
“I have always given it my all because I want to win matches. If you score 600–700 runs and don’t take home a trophy, it doesn’t matter. The runs won’t make a difference.
In the current IPL 2025 season, Rohit Sharma has amassed 293 runs at an average of 32.55, hitting at 155.02, and hitting three fifties.
“During the 2019 World Cup, I learnt my lessons. What will I do with those 500–600 runs if you can’t make it to the final and take home the trophy? He emphasised the importance of winning as a team by saying, “It might be good for me but not for the team.”
Since MI has won five IPL titles (in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020), no MI player has ever taken home the Orange Cap, demonstrating the team’s consistent dominance.
“No member of our team has ever won the Orange Cap when MI has taken home a trophy. That’s for a purpose,” Rohit Sharma remarked.
