The Indian squad has turned its attention to the next T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA, following a heartbreaking loss in the ODI World Cup 2023 finals last month. On the other hand, there is a lot of conjecture surrounding the person who would lead the “Men in Blue” during the main event. More than a year has passed since Rohit Sharma last played for India in the shortest version of the game, when his team fell to England in the 2022 T20 World Cup quarterfinals by a margin of 10 wickets.

In the T20 format, Hardik Pandya has led the Indian squad ever since. Due to an ankle injury, the all-rounder is presently unable to play. Suryakumar Yadav is captaining the team in the current five-match Twenty20 International Series against Australia. Sourav Ganguly, a former captain of India, has supported Rohit to captain the squad in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

“Considering how brilliantly he performed in the World Cup, Rohit Sharma ought to be the captain of India. He is an executive. Ganguly told the reporters, “So I anticipate, and I presume, that he will continue as captain until the T20 World Cup.”

In the Twenty21 T20 World Cup, Rohit replaced Virat Kohli as captain of India after the latter’s team was unable to advance past the group stage. It should be noted that at that time, Sourav served as President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In a few interviews, he has talked about how he persuaded Rohit to accept the esteemed position.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma decide not to play the white-ball leg in South Africa.

India is scheduled to play a multi-format series in the Rainbow Nation. The BCCI released the squads for the three formats on Thursday, November 30. Prior to the two-match Test series, Rohit and Virat will rejoin the team after being absent from the T20I and ODI squads. The cricket governing body explained in a statement that Virat and Rohit had asked to be excused from the white-ball phase of the tour.

The BCCI stated in its statement that “Mr. Rohit Sharma and Mr. Virat Kohli had requested the Board for a break from the white-ball leg of the tour.”
