Rohit Sharma should continue at No. 6 for India’s future: Cheteshwar Pujara

"Rohit Sharma has not scored many runs against New Zealand and did not start well in Australia, so there is pressure on him to perform," Cheteshwar Pujara remarked.

Rohit Sharma should continue at No. 6 for India's future: Cheteshwar Pujara

In order to focus on the future of Indian cricket, Cheteshwar Pujara said that Rohit Sharma should keep batting at number six. After their match-winning 201-run partnership in the first Test, the in-form pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul continued to lead the order in the second Test in Adelaide after the talismanic Indian captain gave up his opening place.

Rohit Sharma has only averaged 11.83 from six Test matches for 2024–25 season, indicating that he has been having trouble with the bat.

Due to his paternity leave, the 37-year-old was unable to attend the first Test match in Perth. He made a comeback to the team in the second Test, although he only managed three and six runs in the two innings.

Before the third Test begins on Saturday, December 14 at the storied Gabba in Brisbane, Pujara believes Rohit would be better off practicing his footwork and displaying more positive purpose with the bat.

There’s some expectation on him to deliver because he hasn’t scored many runs against New Zealand and didn’t start well in Australia. However, someone who is aware of his abilities, like him, will only need to be more upbeat and improve his footwork a little more. In the lead-up to the Brisbane Test match, Cheteshwar Pujara stated in a video that “it will help him if he has a little bigger stride.”

“He has been having a lot of problems with the stump line. He has been getting out bowled and LBW, which worries him a little. He needs to practise that line in the nets since he appears more at ease on the balls outside off stump. He should keep batting at number six, in my opinion. We are considering KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and the future of India. They did a great job at bat in the first Test match, and Shubman will probably bat at number three as well. I believe Rohit should continue to bat at number six because we should consider the long term,” he continued.
