In response to India’s recent Test cricket setbacks, former captain Sourav Ganguly voiced his worries and urged captain Rohit Sharma to assume leadership duties. Although Rohit has excelled in white-ball cricket, Ganguly said his Test results have been lackluster. The former captain thinks Rohit needs to improve as a batsman and leader for India ahead of a five-match Test series against England.
India hasn’t played its best in Test matches lately. In October and November of 2024, the team was humiliated by New Zealand in a record 0–3 thumping at home. The team’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final were then dashed after a 1-3 series loss in Australia. The team’s strategy in the game’s longest format has come under scrutiny after these consecutive losses. Sourav Ganguly was not afraid to confront Rohit’s inconsistent performance in Test cricket.
He went on, “Rohit Sharma needs to figure out how to get this team moving.”
“His performance in red ball over the past four to five years has shocked me. He can do far better than what he has done, considering his size and skill. We have five Test matches against England, which will be another challenging series, so he needs to put on his thinking cap. similar to how things were in Australia. It is going to swing; it will seam. Ganguly, the former captain of India, stated during Trailblazers 3.0 by RevSportz that “India needs him to perform in the red ball but in the white ball, he is one of the greatest ever.”
The five-Test series in England will kick off India’s upcoming WTC cycle on June 20. The team will have a fantastic opportunity to recover on the tour, but it won’t be simple. Since 2007, India has failed to win a Test series in England.
“I don’t find it shocking that he has led the team to greater success in white ball. If he is listening to me, he should take charge of improving his performance in red-ball cricket. I’m not sure if he will continue playing Test cricket. India needs to examine its current red-ball shortcomings and figure out how to do well in England, as that will be a crucial five-Test series.
