‘We didn't bat well in the first innings’- Rohit Sharma reflects on 2nd Test loss to New Zealand

New Zealand defeated Team India in the second Test of their current three-match series. After three days of cricket at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, where the two teams faced off, New Zealand emerged victorious with a strong performance.

The hosts had a goal of 359 runs to pursue after New Zealand, who had scored 259 runs in the first innings, held India to 156 runs and then added 255 runs. The game was won by New Zealand by 113 runs, and India’s response was only 245.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, spoke up on the team’s performance after the match. In addition to discussing the pitch, he conveyed his unhappiness with the performance.

Our batting performance in the first innings was poor. The batters are aware that they did not meet the pressure and challenge of playing on any pitch, which is why we only managed to reach 150. There was nothing wrong with the pitch. “We simply didn’t perform well enough to reach the first inning and get closer to their first inning score,” Rohit stated at the news conference held after the game.

We didn’t react to the pressure: Rohit Sharma

The India captain also discussed the relationship between Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second innings, but he believed that they were put under pressure and ultimately fell apart after losing wickets quickly.

After falling down by 100 runs, we always knew that it would be difficult to reach our goal since the pitch began to act a little differently as the game progressed. 359 to obtain after that. We were aware that our mindset was one of wanting to score those runs. Jaiswal and Gil formed a fantastic middle-field partnership with us, but we soon lost wickets once more.

And then, you know, we didn’t react to that pressure,” Rohit added. “Obviously, we understood that the game was sliding out of our hands.”
