Rohit Sharma on the Wankhede Stadium stand bearing his name: "Never dreamt something like this."

Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian team, said he never thought he would have a stand at Mumbai’s famous Wankhede Stadium named after him. The right-handed batter said the gesture was a terrific honour and quite emotional. He has guided the team to major triumphs, like as the Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup in the last year, and is considered by many to be one of India’s most successful white-ball captains.

At the Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) 86th Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, April 15, the decision was made to name the stand in his honour. As Rohit Sharma thought back on the award, he reminisced about his early days of attending Ranji Trophy matches at the Wankhede.

“When I first started playing cricket, I never had a dream like this. I recall wanting to go in and witness the Mumbai Ranji team members back then. In 2003–04, we would cross the track to see Mumbai Ranji players after U16 practice at Azad Maidan. Those were the times. It’s a different experience now than it was when I played my first game. During his press conference to announce his appointment as the Mumbai Premier League’s (MPL) ambassador, Rohit Sharma remarked, “I have so many memories at the stadium since then.”

“We won the World Cup after renovating the stadium. It’s unbelievable to think of a stand in my name after so many unforgettable games were played there. Unimaginable. The moment will be emotional. Thank you for this honour. You have no idea how long you’ll be playing when you first start. It’s emotional to be able to attend the stadium now and have a stand in my name,” he continued.

The Mumbai cricket project serves as a springboard: Rohit Sharma

According to the Indian legend, Mumbai Cricket’s initiative provides a significant platform for up-and-coming players. He pointed out that although many gifted cricket players don’t have many opportunities, this event gives them visibility. He highlighted that it would garner a lot of attention and that some people would even use it as a route to the IPL.

For the players, this effort provided a huge platform. Some men are currently playing for India, while others played for IPL teams throughout the previous two seasons. Many talented cricket players in India lack the proper platform. Many players who don’t get a chance in Ranji are being given an opportunity in Mumbai cricket. There will be a lot of people watching this tournament, which will attract attention. “This tournament is an easy way to play for the IPL,” Rohit Sharma stated in reference to Mumbai Cricket’s proposal.
