Did Rohit Sharma have to give up playing Test cricket? Rajeev Shukla, vice president of the BCCI, speaks out

On May 7, Rohit Sharma posted an Instagram story announcing his retirement from Test cricket. The 38-year-old scored 4301 runs at an average of 40.58 in his 67 Test matches. During his stellar Test career, he amassed 12 hundreds and 18 half-centuries.

Following a protracted period of poor form, Rohit had been left out of the squad for the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar series earlier this year. Some thought that outside pressure impacted the Nagpur-born player’s choice to declare his retirement from red-ball cricket prior to the crucial five-match Test tour of England.

However, vice-president Rajeev Shukla of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) affirmed that Rohit’s decision was entirely personal and that the board has a rule prohibiting them from becoming involved in such matters.

Regarding Rohit Sharma’s choice to withdraw from Test cricket, he made it on his own. We applaud his choice. According to India Today, Shukla stated, “It is our policy that the players who decide to retire—we do not put any pressure on them, nor do we suggest anything, nor do we say anything.”

Rohit Sharma batting prowess was widely praised by Shukla, who also said that other players will benefit from his expertise since he will continue to play in the ODI format.

He has significantly impacted Test cricket. The more we give him credit, the less of it there is. He’s a fantastic batsman. Fortunately, he hasn’t made the decision to give up cricket just yet. Therefore, we will undoubtedly capitalise on his skills and experience. And we hope he has a bright future,” Shukla added.

The new Test captain will be chosen by selectors: Shukla

The next Test captain of India has been the subject of several conjectures. Shukla, however, stated that everyone should wait for the ultimate decision, which he verified will be made by the selectors, rather than engaging in speculation.

“The selectors are responsible for that. No, there should be no conjecture. “It is entirely up to the selectors to decide and tell you who the captain is,” Shukla said.
