Watch: Rohit Sharma arrive at Wankhede Stadium to train with Mumbai's Ranji Trophy team

On Tuesday, January 14, India’s Test and One-Day International captain Rohit Sharma came at the Wankhede Stadium to prepare with the Mumbai team for the Ranji Trophy 2024–25 second phase.

A video that has gone viral on social media shows the famed batter parking his car and carrying his kitbag into the famous venue so that Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team can train. According to a Monday report by the Indian Express, the 37-year-old, who had a poor performance against Australia in the recently finished Border-Gavaskar Trophy, would attend the training session on Tuesday morning.

Since 2015, Rohit Sharma has not represented Mumbai in a Ranji Trophy game.

He faced Uttar Pradesh in his final game in India’s top domestic league. Back then, he hadn’t established himself as a fixture in India’s red-ball lineup.

Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy campaign will begin on January 23 when they play Jammu & Kashmir in Group A. There is still uncertainty around Rohit’s involvement in the match, according to a Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) source.

“His participation in the upcoming Ranji Trophy match against J&K is still up in the air, but he will be joining the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team for practice sessions. An MCA insider had stated, “He will notify the MCA when the time is right.”

Rohit only managed 31 runs in three Test matches against Australia. He was on paternity leave, thus he missed the first Test. The Nagpur native participated in the next three matches but was unable to score any runs. The fifth and final Test match saw Rohit remove himself from the starting lineup. He was clear after the match, though, that he had no immediate plans to stop playing the game’s longest format.

After India’s 1-3 loss in Australia, there were rumours that Rohit would be taking over as captain of the Test team. According to reports, the veteran declared his willingness to continue leading the side to the BCCI. But according to BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, Rohit never stated that he wanted to stay captain because he was already in charge of the team.

It has never been said by Rohit Sharma that he want to continue leading the test team as captain. “He’s the captain already,” Shukla stated during an interview.
