Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have announced their retirements from Test cricket. On May 12 and May 7, the two best Indian batsmen announced their retirements, respectively. Regarding the annual retainership list, the names of Rohit and Kohli in the Grade A-plus category were released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In April 2025, the BCCI made this ruling.
The pair’s ability to maintain their Grade A+ status in BCCI’s core contracts has been the subject of much conjecture. Their top-tier designation is still valid because the contractual time is October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. The luxury of a Grade A+ contract has traditionally been granted to athletes who are consistent in all three formats.
Devajit Saikia, the BCCI secretary, clarified the situation of Rohit and Virat Kohli position.
“Why aren’t both Rohit and Virat in the A+ category when they are both playing for India? According to India Today, Saikia said, “Both will continue in the same grade and will receive all the facilities of that grade.”
Apart from Rohit and Kohli, the only other players on the list for Grade A+ contracts for the current cycle are Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah. The seasoned pair, who now want to concentrate just on the ODI format, will probably be demoted in the upcoming cycle.
It will be interesting to watch how India performs on their next trip of England without Rohit and Kohli. On June 20, the five-match series is set to start. Shubman Gill is now seen as the front-runner to assume the duty of captaining India in the game’s longest format. It is anticipated that the last decision will be made soon.
