'It was a misjudgment on my part'- Rohit Sharma admits to misreading conditions ahead of 1st Test against New Zealand

Indian captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged that he was unable to predict how the pitch would actually behave and pointed the finger at shot selection as the primary factor that failed the hitters.

The hosts had to move on from the second day of the first Test of the three-match series between India and New Zealand. With a miserable 46 in their first innings—India’s lowest Test score on home soil and their third-lowest in the format—they were completely destroyed by a pulverizing Kiwi assault led by Matt Henry’s five-wicket haul and William O’Rourke’s four-fer. Even more unexpected was their choice to bat on a cloudy day with a soggy ground and dreary sky throughout Bengaluru.

Following the first session or so, we believed it would not significantly benefit the seamers. Also, there wasn’t much grass. Compared to what we anticipated, it was lot flatter. I made a mistake in judgment and was unable to read the pitch accurately. Given that we were bowled out for 46 on a pitch with seamer assistance, you could conclude that the shot selection was subpar. That day wasn’t good. At the press conference held after the game, Rohit said, “There are times when you have plans but don’t follow through.”

The reason why Virat Kohli, the star batsman, entered at number three—a position he hasn’t held in the longest format since August 2016—was also discussed by Rohit.

“We want to avoid making too many changes to KL’s batting position. He has located a spot at six, so let’s help him get there. Similarly, as Sarfaraz is also new to international cricket, we decided to assign him a position that is similar to his batting position. Therefore, Virat was the one who desired to assume accountability. He was okay with the conversation we had. The fact that players are accepting responsibility is encouraging,” Rohit said.

Hopefully, he’ll return for this game: Rohit Sharma

In addition, Rohit gave an update on the injury sustained by wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who was hit in the right knee by the final delivery of the 37th over.

It struck his knee directly. He hurt. The swelling on his knee is a problem. He had the surgery done on the same knee. Therefore, Rishabh and I don’t want to take any chances. I’m hoping he’ll return for this game,” Rohit continued.

After Pant was replaced, Dhruv Jurel continued to take wickets. As of right now, New Zealand sits at 180/3 in 50 overs, with Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra holding the crease and guiding the visitors to Stumps.
