“What a tremendous role model,” Rohit says of Dravid’s lasting impact on his career

The Indian captain was eager to give the departing coach a trophy rather than talk him out of reapplying for the job.

"What a tremendous role model," Rohit says of Dravid's lasting impact on his career

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, made an unsuccessful attempt to persuade the departing coach, Rahul Dravid, to continue in his role. Rohit, who coached teams under Dravid and played alongside him in the IPL, expressed his desire for the link to continue. However, Dravid made the decision not to apply for an extension when his present tenure expires in 2024 with the T20 World Cup.

“I tried convincing him to stay, but obviously, there are a lot of things that he needs to look after as well,” Rohit stated. “Yeah, I have liked our time together individually. The other guys will probably say the same thing. Working with him has been fantastic, and I hopeTo be honest, I won’t say anything. I’m going to remain silent.”

Finally, Rohit said he hoped they sent Dravid go with a trophy in an attempt to avoid casting too much doubt on the outcome. Still, he could reflect on happy times in the past. When asked whether they were planning to do something special for the departing coach, Rohit replied, “We have not really thought of it.” However, my relationship with him is quite old. When I made my debut in Ireland, he was my first international captain. Then, I watched him play in Test matches when he was captain when I was just joining the squad. And such a great example for the rest of us. As children, we used to watch him play.

We are aware of his accomplishments as a player and his years of service to the team, which include his ability to save the squad in trying circumstances. And he is well-known for it. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a great deal of determination, and that was something I wanted to learn from when he came here to coach. Aside from the large trophies, it’s been rather successful; I believe we’ve won every significant competition, series, and other thing.

Having said that, I believe I have cherished every minute of collaborating with him to choose the best course of action for the team. And it makes a big difference whether he accepts that idea. And he was the first to arrive and declare, “This is what our team needs to do.”

For India, that missing cutlery has turned into a bit of a barrier. In 2007, Rohit made his debut for his country as a member of the T20 World Cup winning squad. A member of the 2011 ODI World Cup winning team was Virat Kohli. In 2013, they both took home the Champions Trophy. However, India hasn’t taken home a world championship since. Rohit was devastated to lose the ODI World Cup final last year despite having a strong run at home. He has talked about how difficult it is to shake that funk. He stated that he now wanted to avoid considering the title before to arriving at the summit clash.

“I have given all of this a lot of thought,” Rohit remarked.

“I’m just going to play my game now, do whatever I can to support the team, and get everyone to play as a unit. I’m going to concentrate on that. ignoring the bigger picture. Those kinds of thinking won’t do much good, in my opinion. I’ll be concentrating on staying in the now and doing what needs to be done at that specific moment because it’s crucial.

“I’m sure each member of the team handles competitions like the World Cup in a unique way. They’ll make the appropriate calls, too, I’m sure. However, I believe that it’s crucial to keep an eye on the present. Just consider the tasks we have ahead of us tomorrow. After you play the game well, decide where to go next. We promise not to overthink things or overwork ourselves.”
