After going through tough times, Riyan Parag talks about his breakthrough IPL 2024 and his call-up for India

After finishing last in earlier Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons, Riyan Parag became the target of trolls. Yet in 2024, Parag made his breakthrough for the Rajasthan Royals, finishing third on the Orange Cap list after collecting 573 runs in 16 games. Prior to the Zimbabwe series, Parag reflected on his previous accomplishments and stated that he is prepared to play for India. This helped him receive his first call-up to the national squad.

Prior to making his debut on the international scene, Riyan Parag stated that his main ambition has always been to play for India, and he is thrilled to be getting close to that goal. In spite of the fact that players can leave the IPL after one successful season, he continued, saying he was committed to playing well and being a regular in the Indian squad. The 22-year-old added that playing cricket internationally can give him a clear path forward.

“I always thought that individuals in our area stopped themselves from having huge dreams when I was a child. I want to get that changed. I haven’t arrived as an international player yet. To play for my nation is my goal. People will then be aware that they have access to a road map and a roadmap from one of their own who has already arrived. People are realising that you can achieve that level even if you’re from a small state like Assam now that I’ve played in the IPL, Parag remarked in an interview with ESPNcricinfo.

The IPL, however, cannot be that ambitious of a goal. You may play for a year and then disappear. The real road plan, though, will probably be determined once I get in the country and play for the national team. Not that they really have to adhere to it. Their personal interpretations are acceptable,” he continued.

I believed that I wasn’t deserving of all the abuse: Riyan Parag

During the previous IPL seasons, Parag was subjected to a great deal of trolling because of his on-field antics and remarks. The cricket player, who was born in Assam, said he didn’t deserve all of the trolling but that he was unable to stop it. Parag went on to say that although he found it difficult to handle everything, he is glad to show everyone else incorrect.

It’s not simple. On the other hand, I spoke with myself following the previous year. Furthermore, I had to put up with things that I didn’t really deserve, so this comeback is personal. I’ve always tried my hardest, even if there have probably been times when I haven’t done everything perfectly or prepared myself. I felt that all of the trolling wasn’t fair, but there was nothing I could do. Whatever the case, people will still say things. It was suggested of me last year that I wasn’t good enough to play in the IPL. They now desire that I join the Indian squad. People so shift like a light switch, according to Parag.
