Ricky Ponting disputes England's commitment to the Bazball strategy, stating, "I don't believe it for a second."

The first Ashes Test of 2023 did not go as anticipated for England‘s Ben Stokes. After declaring their innings at 393 runs on the first day, Stokes’ strategy appeared to misfire as Australia won the game by two wickets on the fifth day. Australia pursued the target and won the game as a result of a brilliant knockdown by the captain, Pat Cummins.

As Australia assumed the lead in the Ashes in 2023, many commentators questioned Stokes’ strategies and mentality after the defeat. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting weighed in on the contest as well. The 48-year-old questioned whether England adheres to their motto of not being result-driven. Ponting’s question gained attention after Stokes acknowledged how devastated he was by the loss.

Ricky Ponting stated on the ICC Review podcast, “I’ve heard them say that before, that they’re not’results driven,’ but I don’t believe that for a second, this is an Ashes series; this is the biggest challenge Ben Stokes has faced as a captain.”

“I will not accept that. I mean, if they aren’t results-driven, they wouldn’t be upset about losing at all. And it appeared to me last night, and he confirmed it, that all of his competitors were eliminated from that game. This indicates to me that they care about losing, and you should too,” he continued.

Ponting also mentioned how difficult it is to win a Test match, particularly the Ashes. He opined that England had control of the game on the first day but squandered it, allowing Australia to capitalise.

“Winning Test matches is difficult, and winning an Ashes Test is even more difficult. When you’re in control of a game of Ashes cricket, you don’t want to give strong cricket teams opportunities to get back in. Late in the first day of play, England dominated the match. Thus, England presented Australia with an opportunity, which Australia seized,” said Ponting.
