Richa Ghosh Honoured with Stadium Promise by Mamata Banerjee

Richa Ghosh, 22, must be ecstatic about the love and support she has received from her supporters and well-wishers following India’s victory in the 2025 Women’s World Cup on November 2. With her excellent batting and tidy wicketkeeping, Richa was not merely a supporting character in the fanciful victory; rather, she was one of its main architects.

The West Bengal government, in partnership with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), hosted a ceremony at Eden Gardens last week to honor Richa Ghosh for her crucial role in India’s historic first-ever Women’s World Cup victory. At the celebration, which celebrated her 34-run knock in the final versus South Africa at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, the wicketkeeper-batter from Siliguri received Bengal’s highest civilian award, the Bangla Bhushan, along with a cash incentive of an incredible INR 34 lakhs.

The West Bengal government has appointed Richa Ghosh as a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

A gold-plated bat and ball signed by Indian great Jhulan Goswami and CAB president Sourav Ganguly, who were also in attendance, were also given to her.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, congratulated Richa Ghosh and the entire Indian team and shared her plans to make sure the accomplishment is remembered for generations to come. Banerjee promised that a stadium called “Richa Ghosh Stadium” would soon be constructed on a 27-acre plot of land in Darjeeling.

At the age of 22, Richa Ghosh won a global championship. We honored her on behalf of the West Bengal government, but I would like to do more. I’ve requested the mayor to design a cricket stadium on the about 27 acres of land in Darjeeling. So that people will remember and be motivated by her performance in the future, it should be called the Richa Ghosh Cricket Stadium, Mamata Banerjee stated.

Richa Ghosh, the first female Indian cricket player to have a stadium named after her, amassed 235 runs from eight games, including a career-high 94. Legends like Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj have previously been honored with stands named in their honor at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens and Visakhapatnam’s ACA-VDCA Stadium, respectively.
