Aakash Chopra, a former cricket player from India, has questioned why Shreyas Iyer was left off of the squad for the major continental tournament. The 15-man squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, captained by Suryakumar Yadav, was unveiled by the BCCI. He did point out, though, that the right-handed batsman is anticipated to be included in the Indian team for the T20 World Cup, which India and Sri Lanka will co-host the following year.
The UAE is set to host the 2025 Asia Cup from September 9–28. Iyer was one of the most prominent exclusions from the selectors’ announcement of the 15-member Indian squad on Tuesday, August 19. Iyer could not have done more to earn a position, Chopra noted, and he is likely to be selected for the 2026 T20 World Cup if he keeps up his strong play in domestic cricket and ODIs.
“Shreyas Iyer’s absence is a major story. What further needs to be done by Shreyas Iyer? Beyond what you have previously done, what else are you capable of? You played Ranji, won the Champions Trophy, led the team to the final, scored runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and amassed more than 600 runs in the IPL. As a human, that’s all you can do,” Chopra stated on his YouTube channel.
The Asia Cup team is this one. There are 15 T20Is after this, therefore don’t include the World Cup. Within 15 T20Is, the world is different. Shreyas Iyer will eventually join the team if he continues to score runs in ODIs. “I’m confident that Shreyas Iyer will play for India in the T20 World Cup,” he continued.
Shreyas Iyer name is not clearly stated: Chopra
Chopra was also taken aback that Iyer was left out of the five reserves selected for the 2025 Asia Cup. Being excluded from the 20-player list does not provide a positive message, the former cricket player turned analyst continued. The Agra native thinks he could have easily been retained on the reserve players’ list by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee.
It’s odd that Shreyas’ name isn’t even listed among the five reserves. Since you can’t play him in the XI, it makes sense that you couldn’t have him in the 15 and that you wanted lower-order batsmen as backup. Since Shivam Dube is there, Rinku Singh will get another shot, which is perfectly normal,” Chopra stated.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prasidh Krishna, and Dhruv Jurel were retained by the selectors, however a spot may have been made at least in the reserve players. The name of this player might have been there. Additionally, they haven’t kept it there, which isn’t a very good indicator. “There is absolutely no clarity in front of Shreyas’ name,” he said.
