Shubman Gill was named India’s new Test captain after reportedly consulting Rahul Dravid. The former Indian coach knows Gill well, having worked with him during the Under-19 days. During Dravid’s time as Indian head coach, Gill developed into an all-format batsman and made a name for himself in the ODI team while playing in the Tests.
The former Indian coach, who collaborated with Gill at both the junior and senior levels, was contacted by the Indian selectors, according to a BCCI source. According to the article, Dravid had nothing but positive things to say about Gill, the leader.
Shubman Gill has sufficient captaincy experience after leading the Gujarat Titans for the second straight season in 2025.
“Dravid, who had coached Gill at the U19 and senior teams and had seen him as a teenager, spoke with the selectors. He had some excellent things to say about Gill’s leadership potential, according to a Hindustan Times report citing a BCCI source.
India’s team for the England Test series
A significant leadership change occurred when India announced their team for the Test series against England. Rishabh Pant will serve as Shubman Gill deputy and Shubman Gill will be India’s permanent Test captain. Aside from them, there are a few exceptionally gifted athletes who haven’t participated in many top-tier games.
Sai Sudharsan and Abhimanyu Easwaran, who have not yet played in a Test match, have been selected for the Indian team. Players who made their debuts in the 2023–25 cycle include Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
A few players have returned to the Test team, including Shardul Thakur and Karun Nair. The XI also includes regulars Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant. Depending on the players’ performance in practice matches and India A matches, India may be selected for the first Test.
