Reece Topley sustains a finger injury during South Africa's match at the ODI World Cup in 2023.

On Saturday, October 21, during England’s match against South Africa in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 at Mumbai’s famed Wankhede Stadium, the team’s star pacer Reece Topley injured his finger. Notably, Topley sliced his finger when diving to stop Rassie van der Dussen’s full-throttle drive back down the ground on the fourth ball of the seventh over. The ball flicked the pacer’s fingertip very near the nail before it crossed the boundary.

He did attempt to bowl one more ball, but this time he conceded a four, showing that his finger was not in excellent condition. When Reece Topley, the fast bowler, had to leave the field to receive medical attention, Joe Root finished the last delivery of his over. Jos Buttler, the captain of England, chose to field first after winning the toss and discussing the game. When he hit a boundary with the first pitch of the game, Quinton de Kock appeared to be in good shape.

He was removed by Reece Topley in the first ball of the match, denying him the chance to play another outstanding innings in the current competition.

Another strong drive through the off side was tried by the South Africa opener, but it missed the inside edge and was easily caught by wicketkeeper Buttler. At first glance, the bat appeared to contact the ground, but the umpire decided in favor of the batter. The decision had to be reversed after England asked for a review since the video showed a gap between the ground and the bat at the precise instant the ball passed it.

England is under fire after losing to Afghanistan in a shocking upset.

In their previous match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, England shockingly lost to Afghanistan. With Adil Rashid taking three wickets, England bowled first and held Afghanistan to 284 runs in 49.5 overs. From the start of the second innings, Afghanistan’s bowlers ran amok, limiting England to 215 in just 40.3 overs.
