RCB's Swapnil Singh Breaks Down Recalling Emotional IPL Comeback

After contributing significantly to Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s incredible journey to the IPL playoffs, Swapnil Singh has emerged as an overnight sensation. After making his RCB debut in Hyderabad last month, the spin-bowling all-round player has contributed to each of their six straight spectacular victories. Before being selected by RCB in the auction, Swapnil had all but given up on his cricket career. His tale is one of redemption and fulfillment that occurs when skill and opportunity collide in a supportive atmosphere.

Speaking on RCB Bold Diaries following RCB’s resounding victory in the Chinnaswamy Stadium playoffs, Swapnil shared how he had considered retiring prior to being selected by RCB at the auction, a momentous occasion for both him and his family.

“I had a game in Dharamsala that day and was traveling there for it.” After I landed, it was about 7-8 p.m. By then, nothing had happened, and the final rounds were underway. Initially, I believed that was it when I missed out. To be honest, I thought it was finished,” Swapnil remarked.

“I did not want to play for the rest of my life, so I felt I would play out the current (domestic) season and, if necessary, finish my career after playing the next season. In life, there are other things to excel in. The seasoned cricket player, who made his senior domestic debut in 2006 as a teenager and shared a room with Virat Kohli while they were in the same age group, expressed his disappointment.

Subsequently, things took a turn for the better when RCB bid for Swapnil Singh during the auction. Tears were streaming down Swapnil’s face. We started crying as soon as my relatives called. because nobody else is aware of the emotional toll the voyage has taken.

Prior to the auction, Swapnil expressed gratitude to Andy Flower, the head coach of the RCB, for believing in him. Flower was impressed by Swapnil’s net bowling performance in the past, and the coach invited him to attend an RCB training camp.

“RCB had arranged a trial-cum-camp prior to selecting me in the auction. I had a conversation with Andy, sir, and filled him in on the details of my (domestic) season. Give me just one chance,’ I said to him. Perhaps this is my last opportunity. Simply trust in me. He expressed his belief in me. For the camp, he contacted me, remarked Swapnil.

Swapnil Singh was ready to wait for his moment to play since he knew he would ultimately get the chance when he walked into the RCB dressing room.

“I never went into the field believing that I wouldn’t be playing. Not only was it my first practice session, but it was also my first match. I was aware that if I was going to play even one game, I would need to hit the ball exactly from the start. Nets, then, was my match,” Swapnil Singh remarked.

And when the chance presented itself, Swapnil Singh seized it wholeheartedly, keen to contribute with both bat and ball. “In the IPL, I have only taken one wicket and have not scored a four or a six,” I would inform my brother. Thus, I’m aiming for a four and a six.

As it happened, Swapnil Singh RCB debut had an immediate effect. He took two wickets and struck a handful of sixes and fours in an undefeated twelve off six. “I knew that our captain, Faf du Plessis, would give me an over to bowl if I got the chance to play. I also bowled seven balls in my first over instead of six. It had escaped me that I would bowl a no-ball. Finally, Swapnil said, “It is God’s blessings because I got a wicket off the seventh ball.”
