Reports: Selectors prefer Washington Sundar and Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja is no longer planned for ODIs

For the series against Sri Lanka, star all-arounder Ravindra Jadeja was left out of the Indian ODI team. While Jasprit Bumrah has been granted rest in preparation for the forthcoming Test series, skipper Rohit Sharma and captain Virat Kohli have chosen to play despite speculations that top players were taking a break from the series. Conversely, Hardik Pandya requested a break for private reasons. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar have taken Jadeja’s place in the interim, and based on sources, that will remain the model moving forward.

Jadeja is not now part of the BCCI’s plans for ODI cricket. Before the Champions Trophy, the Men in Blue will only play six ODIs, with the intention of using these games to give Axar and Sundar more playing time. There is nothing wrong with Jadeja’s performance, according to a person close to the development who spoke to Hindustan Times, but the management wants to assemble a team for the future.

The three ODIs in Sri Lanka are part of the meagre six ODIs that precede the Champions Trophy the following year. According to a BCCI source, the selectors aim to make the most of the few games by providing Axar Patel and Washington Sundar with further chances.

There was nothing flawed in Ravindra Jadeja’s performance. We need to assemble a team for the future, so the management just wants to consider alternative possibilities,” he continued.

Notably, Axar was included in the Indian team for the 2023 ODI World Cup; however, he was unable to participate due to an injury before to the competition. He has since performed admirably in the game’s abbreviated version and become a vital member of the Rohit Sharma-led team in the T20 World Cup 2024. Thus far, in 57 One-Day Internationals, he has amassed 60 wickets and 489 runs.

In Washington, it is anticipated that the cricket player will have possibilities to play white-ball cricket. He enjoyed himself during the most recent Zimbabwe series and will be looking to build on that success.
