Ravichandran Ashwin discusses the retention rule in front of the IPL mega auction, saying, "There is nothing more unfair for a player than RTM."

Regarding the Right to Match (RTM) option in IPL super auctions, legendary spin ace Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his opinions. Many IPL clubs are reportedly in favor of having numerous RTMs in the forthcoming IPL 2025 super auction.

Prior to the 2022 season, the RTM cards were discarded during the most recent IPL mega auction. That being said, the regulation is expected to return in the upcoming IPL player auction. However, Ashwin, a spinner for the Rajasthan Royals, voiced his reservations about the RTM rule, claiming that it was unfair to the players. The renowned cricket player described how a team that could keep a player by using the RTM rule would not make any bids beyond the basic price, robbing the player of his true demand.

The ace spin legend questioned how the RTM system has contributed to the ruthless auctions between IPL franchises, labeling it unfair. He gave the instance of a player designating him as “X.” With his prospective skill sets, the player in issue will not be able to command a better price; instead, he will be forced to accept his base price. Therefore, even though the ‘X’ player’s current price was more than the indicated base price, he will be at a significant loss and it will be unjust of him if a franchise decides to go all in by using the RTM card.

“A player by the name of X is one example. He plays for the Sunrisers, a team. A member of the SunRisers is present. Right now, he is worth between five and six crores. He attended an auction. SunRisers must purchase the player’s return. Thus, in a video posted to his YouTube account, Ashwin stated, “The SunRisers will make a bid for the player at a base price of two crore.”

“RTM is the most unjust thing that can happen to a player. Since how effective has the RTM rule been thus far? One player is named X, for instance. He plays for the Sunrisers, a team. A member of the SunRisers is present. Right now, he is worth between five and six crores. He attended an auction. SunRisers must purchase the player’s return. Thus, the player would be acquired by the SunRisers for a base fee of two crore “, he continued.

The issue with RTM is that it does not provide the player with fair value. Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin continued by describing how the player would realize he didn’t receive the full value for the demand he received and how the other teams involved in the bidding war would be left unhappy.

The Mumbai Indians and KKR are engaged in combat. It has increased to six crores for a team. What is said by SRH? I take it you purchased the player? Give the player back. They’re playing you, as Soori says in Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu. We’ll get back to work. incredibly unjust. Because SRH needs to receive the player’s fair worth at this point. The unfair value that RTM provides to the player is the issue. Thus, the players will only leave empty-handed if you grant three RTMs. Fair value is already absent from the sale, Ashwin stated in the same video.

According to reports, a number of teams have stated that they would like to keep their key members. It is therefore anticipated that each team may be granted a sizable number of retentions and RTMs. It is anticipated that the BCCI will make a ruling on this issue soon.
