Ravi Shastri wishes for Shami's quick return to Test team to ease Bumrah's burden in BGT

India’s bowling workload in the present Border-Gavaskar Trophy has mostly been carried by star bowler Jasprit Bumrah. Ravi Shastri, a former Indian coach, has emphasised the need for Mohammed Shami to rejoin the team immediately, citing his ability to balance the bowling attack and relieve pressure on Bumrah.

After missing a year of action due to an ankle injury, Shami, one of India’s best pacers, has been making a strong recovery. The 34-year-old, who is playing for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), has taken eight wickets in seven games and produced economical spells.

During the second day of the ongoing pink-ball Test in Adelaide, Shastri made a request for Shami’s comeback during commentary. “It is beneficial for India if Mohammed Shami gets here sooner.

Ravi Shastri stated, “He is participating in a lot of domestic games.”

Shami has not yet been given the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) fitness clearance, despite these advancements. In order to determine if he can handle the pressure of playing Test cricket, the National Cricket Academy’s (NCA) Sports Science division is keeping a careful eye on his physical condition. He is anticipated to remain with the Bengal team for the SMAT knockout stages.

Shami, who has taken 31 wickets in eight Test matches, has been instrumental in India’s triumph in Australia, according to Shastri. Melbourne or Sydney are more practical choices for his inclusion, the former coach suggested, advising against hurrying his return.

“The pressure (on the opposition) is evident when Bumrah bowls and others bowl as well. The strain on Bumrah is high. Although it may be too early for Brisbane, the 62-year-old stated that “Shami can definitely be available for Melbourne and Sydney.”

Even if Shami’s absence is felt, BCCI sources are hesitant to include him right away. The seasoned pacer may not play in the series at all, and the NCA has not yet provided an all-clear report.
