Ravi Shastri Picks His Greatest Indian ODI Cricketers

Having watched Indian cricket develop from close quarters as a player, analyst, and coach, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed his top five all-time Indian ODI cricketers. A list of some of India’s greatest match-winners in the 50-over format was unveiled by Shastri during the ongoing 2nd ODI between Australia and India in Adelaide.

Five players who have significantly impacted Indian cricket and performed exceptionally well in the ODI format were chosen by Ravi Shastri . He named MS Dhoni, Kapil Dev, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Sachin Tendulkar. Legends like Rohit, Dhoni, and Kohli were taught by Dev after he played for India during their historic World Cup victory in 1983. He has also maintained a close relationship with Tendulkar through mentoring and commentary. Each of these players has contributed significantly to India’s success in One-Day Internationals throughout the years, he disclosed.

“Yes, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Kapil Dev, Tendulkar, and Kohli will be my picks. As you may imagine, these players are nearing the conclusion of their careers. For more than ten years, some of them performed for more than ten and a half years. I would say that it’s difficult to choose. You know, when you look back, there are a lot of other talented athletes there. But these catch my attention. There, they have been excellent contributors to World Cup captains who have also won the tournament. Additionally, all of the players on that list have won World Cups, with the exception of Rohit Sharma. Unfortunately, Rohit’s three double hundreds and more than 11,000 runs make him impossible to ignore. He is third on the list of players who score runs. He said, “And all of these are real match winners on their designated day.”

Notably, Kohli has amassed over 14,000 runs and 51 hundreds, while Tendulkar continues to hold the record for most runs scored in ODI history with 18,426. In 1983, Kapil Dev transformed Indian cricket with his leadership and all-around skill. MS Dhoni’s leadership and finishing prowess contributed to India’s victory in the 2011 World Cup. Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, is one of the most devastating openers in the format with three double hundreds and more than 11,000 runs. Given how much cricket the pacer still has remaining, Shastri added that he had left out Jasprit Bumrah.

“And the only reason I’ve not put Bumrah there, that Bumrah has got another three, four years of cricket left,” Ravi Shastri said.
