'Sunil Gavaskar smashed the plate on the wall' - Ravi Shastri's funny claim on India conceding no balls at Wankhede

On Friday, November 1, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja delivered a number of no-balls during the first day of the last Test match between India and New Zealand. The famous Sunil Gavaskar, who is extremely picky about how the fundamentals of the sport are performed, was not pleased with the frequent mistakes.

The adage that spinners should avoid pitching no-balls due to their slower and shorter run-ups is one of the most often used in cricket. Sundar and Jadeja, however, were on the verge of competing to see who could go overboard the most times. Ultimately, Jadeja bowled three and Sundar delivered five no-balls. India bowled nine no-balls in the first innings, with fast bowler Akash Deep overstepping once.

“It’s unacceptable. It makes sense that a quick bowler’s body momentum could occasionally push your foot over the boundary. However, spinners? Players frequently claim that we have no control over certain situations. After Sundar delivered his first no-ball, Gavaskar commented on-air, “As this is one thing under control, you might as well be cautious.”

Ravi Shastri, meanwhile, made the amusing tale that Gavaskar smashed a plate against the wall in despair while eating lunch as the no-balls began to pile up.

During lunch, Sunil Gavaskar was eating. The plate was broken against the wall by him. He’s not fielding in the slip, thank heavens. Shastri joked on live that Washington would have been close to Washington, DC.

Sunil Gavaskar will chase after them while holding a microphone: Ian Smith
When discussing the several no-balls that the Indian spinners bowled, Kiwi commentator Ian Smith also brought up Gavaskar’s name.

“Oh no. One more no-ball. Sunny G, where are you? With a microphone in hand, he will chase after them. When Gavaskar went back on live, he amused himself by saying, “Yeah, don’t worry. I’m wearing my jogging sneakers. On a more serious note, though, it’s something that need examination.

With five and four wickets taken by Jadeja and Sundar, respectively, India knocked out New Zealand by 235. India is only 40 runs behind after reaching 195/5 at lunchtime on day two. The home team’s Shubman Gill (70*) and Jadeja (10*) remain at the crease despite Rishabh Pant’s dismissal for 60.
