Twitter reactions: Rachin Ravindra stands between Sri Lanka and win after a hard-fought fourth day

When Rachin Ravindra raised fifty more, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, and captain Tim Southee offered no assistance. Just four, two, and two runs were contributed by each of the three batters, respectively. The umpires chose to end the Test match early, with the outcome to be determined on the last day, despite the best efforts of the Sri Lankan bowlers to win the match.

Day 4 of the first Test match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand began with the hosts, led by captain Dhananjaya de Silva and Angelo Mathews, at the crease as they continued their second innings at the overnight score of 237/4.

Early in the day, the tourists requested a new ball, which paid off as they were able to remove the Sri Lankan captain, who had only six runs left on his overnight total of 34. The next player to arrive was Kusal Mendis, who hit a speedy 23 from 30 balls before Ajaz Patel rattled his stumps. Mathews, meanwhile, maintained his 34-run score and reached his 43rd half-century in Test cricket.

When Rachin Ravindra raised fifty more, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, and captain Tim Southee offered no assistance.

But just as Patel turned fifty, his side made yet another advancement. The Sri Lankan tail was quickly bunched by the Kiwis at 309. Patel was the best bowler for New Zealand, hitting a six-fer. In the end, William O’Rourke had three scalps against Mitchell Santner’s single scalp.

The visitors had a terrible start to their chase of 275 as opener Devon Conway walked back in the second over of the innings, having scored only four runs. The next batter to enter, veteran batter Kane Williamson, was confident he could improve on his first-inning score of 55.

Even though Williamson and Tom Latham helped push the total above fifty runs, Jayasuriya dismissed the highly effective right-hander at thirty runs. With the score at 28, opener Latham, who was attempting to extend his innings, found himself strolling back to the pavilion.

After making just eight runs on the scorecard, all-rounder Daryl Mitchell was quickly back in the changing room as well, with New Zealand struggling at 96/4. After that, Rachin Ravindra and Tom Blundell teamed up to form an important 56-run partnership. Blundell finished his innings with four boundaries before being removed for thirty.

ust four, two, and two runs were contributed by each of the three batters, respectively. The umpires chose to end the Test match early, with the outcome to be determined on the last day, despite the best efforts of the Sri Lankan bowlers to win the match.

Both teams will need to win on the fifth day, as New Zealand needs 68 runs to win and Sri Lanka needs two wickets to win the first Test.

At the end of Day 4, Ravindra was still undefeated at 91. Ramesh Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya, who each took three wickets, were the hosts’ top bowlers.
