After a two-year break, Rachin Ravindra is set to make his eagerly awaited return to Test cricket on home ground. The 24-year-old, who won the coveted ICC awards’ “Emerging Player of the Year” title, will bat in the middle of the order during the next Test series against South Africa.
While Henry Nicholls is left off of the squad for the two Test matches, Ravindra is included. The southpaw’s Test career has been irregular, with only one match against Bangladesh in January 2022 after making his debut during the India tour in 2021. Even though he had an outstanding World Cup performance, he was not selected for the Bangladesh series.
As a selector, it pleased me to see several players contribute in the most recent series in Bangladesh. Another player whose performances to the team in the last 12 months of international cricket have truly pleased us is Rachin Ravindra. Head coach Gary Stead was reported by Cricbuzz as saying, “We’ve been especially pleased with his ability to adapt and learn in different roles.”
Tim Southee has a dilemma with his left arm spinner.
Captain Tim Southee will have to choose between two left-arm spinners in the forthcoming series, with leg spinner Ish Sodhi being sidelined and Mitchell Santner chosen as the lead spinner over Ajaz Patel. One of the potential for left-arm spinning is Ravindra. Glenn Phillips is aiming for his first home Test since making his 2019–20 debut against Australia while displaying his skill in Bangladesh. His addition highlights the team’s depth of strategy and possible ability to win games in the next series.
The return of Kyle Jamieson, Kane Williamson, and Tom Blundell highlighted New Zealand’s stronger lineup in the most recent team release. The trio is expected to be available for the first game of the series after recuperating from previous ailments. Anticipated to begin on February 4 at the Bay Oval, the first Test is sure to be a thrilling way to kick off the series.
