At the 2024–2025 Border–Gavaskar series, R Ashwin declared his retirement from international cricket. However, after being signed by the five-time winners for INR 9.75 crore, he played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
He declared his retirement from the IPL on ‘X’ (previously Twitter) on Wednesday, August 27. He stated his desire to participate in international leagues. For those who are unaware, unless a player retires from Indian cricket, the BCCI prohibits them from participating in foreign competitions. Ashwin is free to play in whichever league he wants worldwide after he announced his retirement from Indian cricket earlier this week.
R Ashwin is taking a different route, turning down a hefty INR 9.75 crore IPL contract, according to former India opener Aakash Chopra.
“Ravichandran Ashwin has also bid farewell to the IPL and stated that he will now play in various competitions around the world. He is setting out on a new path. Although he has had an amazing IPL career, all good stories come to an end, and this is where his journey finishes. Does this imply that other Indian athletes can play in other leagues as well? On his YouTube channel, Chopra asked.
Chopra stated that although he thinks R Ashwin would have possibilities in any league he chooses to play in, other players may find it difficult to do so due to the BCCI’s previously mentioned stringent regulations.
“He will be selected wherever he puts his name, and he will perform admirably. To preserve the IPL’s uniqueness, Indian players are prohibited from competing in other leagues. A somewhat significant disclaimer is that you must withdraw from both international cricket and the IPL if you must move and play somewhere else. “Only if you bid farewell to IPL money can you go and play somewhere else,” he continued.
R Ashwin is taking a very different approach: Chopra
Chopra, a former cricket player for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), said that even with an incredible deal, only a select few Indian players would have the courage to retire from the IPL.
“Players like that are really rare. Something very different is being done by Ravichandran R Ashwin. Despite having a contract of Rs. 9.75 crore, he is departing, authoring a different story. Not everyone is able to accomplish it. No one will purchase someone outside if they are purchased for less money. The former India opener asked, “Why would someone leave if he is making a good living here?”
Chopra also gave R Ashwin praise for his outstanding career. Despite not having a doosra delivery in his repertoire, the cricket player-turned-commentator praised him for succeeding in international cricket.
“We should honour R Ashwin. Apart from the numbers, he has accomplished several amazing feats. There is no doosra and the action is flawless, yet as a bowler, he has remained continuously relevant. For a finger spinner, this arrangement is really challenging. He has been excellent. outthinking the batter all the time. He remarked, “It looks like he hasn’t bowled two balls that are similar.”
