The Quetta Gladiators and coach Shane Watson are debating whether to switch up the captain for the PSL 2024 season. Remarkably, the franchise performed poorly recently while being incredibly stable in the past, sparking several talks of a potential move before the upcoming release.
Owner of the Quetta Gladiators, Nadeem Omar, recently declared he has “double-minded” feelings about Sarfaraz being captain on the Relukattay podcast. But he emphasized that if the team did elect to switch captains, they would still honor him and not act like the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and fire him without warning.
People question me about this everywhere I go. However, we are somewhat unique among franchises in that we have a close relationship with these athletes. ESPNcricinfo cited Omar as saying, “I know cricket players have a limited shelf life, but I think over Pakistan’s history, we tend to dump players unceremoniously.”
Over the past few years, Sarfaraz has not been at his best. There are several causes for this; in particular, the fact that the PCB abruptly fired him didn’t help given that he still had several years left. We will not discard him without a fight. We’ll give him full credit; we haven’t decided yet. Sarfaraz informed me that he would be pleased to resign if Quetta wishes to alter course. In a few days, we’ll make a decision after speaking with Shane Watson,” he continued.
Remarkably, Sarfaraz has guided Gladiators since the company’s founding in 2016. In the first season, he assisted the club in making it to the championship game, and in 2019, he took home the prize. They haven’t made it to the playoffs since then, though. As a result, there have been talks lately about a potential captaincy switch, and a decision will be made before the upcoming season, which is anticipated to start in February.
