One of India’s top young performers is Prithvi Shaw, according to many. He scored a hundred on his international debut against the West Indies in 2018, but he has since faded from view. The Mumbai hitter has travelled to England to play for Northamptonshire in an effort to rebound after a disappointing Indian Premier League 2023 campaign.
On Friday, August 4, as Lewis McManus’ team faced Gloucestershire in a One-Day Cup Group B match at Cheltenham, he made his much awaited Northants debut. Northamptonshire, who needed to win the match, lost half of their team for 30 runs in the first ten overs of their chase of 279 runs. But Prithvi didn’t retreat; he scored 34 runs in just as many balls, thanks to two fours and a single six. The right-handed batter’s 35th pitch ended up being his last, when he attempted to hook a quick bouncer from Paul van Meekeren but lost his balance. Prithvi accidentally kicked his own stumps as he struck the ground and was out at the wicket.

Tom Taylor, batting at No. 8, produced an impressive 112 runs off 88 balls as Northamptonshire rallied from 54/6 to lose by just 23 runs. The team will play again on Sunday, August 6, when they take on Sussex. As he pursues a comeback to the Indian setup, Prithvi will be hoping to go big.
IPL 2023 was terrible for Prithvi Shaw.
With an average of 13.25 runs per game and a strike rate of 124.71, the 23-year-old suffered his lowest IPL season in 2023 while playing for Delhi Capitals. Midway through the competition, Prithvi was benched but made his way back into the starting XI for the final few games.
In a T20I match against Sri Lanka in 2021, the young player played his final game for India and was dismissed for a duck. Prior to this year’s IPL, he was summoned back into the Indian T20I squad, but the management opted to start Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan at the top of the order, leaving him out of the starting XI. The Indian T20 team that was chosen to play the West Indies in a five-match series dropped Prithvi following the poor IPL season.
