The opening batsman, Prithvi Shaw, went unsold twice in the IPL mini-auction 2026 before being acquired by the Delhi Capitals, his previous team. Both before and after DC intervened to secure Shaw for INR 75 lakh, his fleeting emotional response on social media went viral.
After being released by the Delhi Capitals prior to the 2025 IPL and missing the entire season, Shaw went into the 2026 IPL auction. Even so, he had a respectable run in the present Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring 183 runs with a strike rate of 160 in seven games. Early in the auction, his name was announced, but no bidders were drawn.
Prithvi Shaw was ignored even in the second accelerated round.
Prithvi Shaw posted an emotional story on Instagram with the words “It’s okay,” a heartbreak emoji, and a hugging emoji after going unsold after two rounds. But a short while later, he signed the Delhi-based franchise.

Shaw was acquired by Delhi Capitals at his base price of INR 75 lakh during the auction’s final accelerated round. Shaw had played with the team from 2018 to 2024, therefore it was a reunion that had been planned for seven seasons. Shaw swiftly removed his previous Instagram story when the agreement was finalised and replaced it with a new one that read, “Back to my family,” along with a red heart emoji.
Interestingly, the team had supported him since he was a teenager, purchasing him in 2018 for INR 1.2 crore following India’s victory in the Under-19 World Cup. Shaw has amassed 1,892 runs with a strike rate of 147.46 in more than 79 IPL games. However, his career lost steam in recent seasons due to inconsistent play, fitness troubles, and disciplinary problems. Shaw has moved from Mumbai to Maharashtra in the domestic arena. He last played for India in 2021, but his national career is over.
