Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar wished to maintain the Pataudi name’s significance in the India-England Test series. Tendulkar suggested that the victorious captain get a medal with the name of the late Indian captain, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, in remembrance of this tradition.
The Pataudi Trophy is currently known as the Anderson-Sachin Tendulkar Trophy in honour of the two greats from their respective countries.
Sachin Tendulkar stated that he hoped to celebrate the rich history that India and England share while simultaneously honouring the legacy of one of India’s finest leaders.
“I recall from a while back. It was a pleasant surprise to me when I learnt that the Pataudi Trophy would be named after the two of us after it had been decommissioned by the ECB and BCCI a few months before. I called the Pataudi family right away after that and spoke with them. I also discussed the importance of preserving the Pataudi legacy and stated, “I’ll have some ideas.” According to ESPNcricinfo, Sachin Tendulkar stated, “I will get back to you.”
“I discussed my ideas with the ECB and BCCI. The result, in my opinion, was excellent. Since he was renowned for his leadership abilities, we agreed that the victorious captain would receive the Pataudi Medal of Excellence. It preserves the legacy. He continued, “I’ve always thought that someone who has made contributions to Indian cricket and cricket worldwide should always be respected and remembered.”
In addition to their engraved signatures, the new trophy includes pictures of Anderson and Tendulkar in action. Sachin Tendulkar has played 200 Test matches, while Anderson has played 188, making them both the most capped players in Test cricket history.
It’s a representation of what we each provide to Test cricket for our various countries. Anderson played for 21 years, and I have played for 24. Together, we have played international cricket, particularly Test cricket, for a significant amount of time—45 years. That brings me joy. I am aware that naming the trophy after us is not the same as showing gratitude,” Tendulkar said in closing.
