Praveen Jayawickrama, a left-arm spinner from Sri Lanka, was charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC) about two months ago on three counts of violating the anti-corruption rule, which pertains to unethical practices in both international matches and the Lanka Premier League. The governing board has thus barred him from playing cricket in any format for a full year.
Jayawickrama acknowledged that he had broken the anti-corruption code. The 26-year-old, who recently celebrated his birthday, has accepted a one-year punishment, of which the last six months are suspended, in light of the admission. The allegations concern the Lanka Premier League and international cricket. The ICC followed Articles 1.7.4.1 and 1.8.1 of the Code in accordance with an agreement with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The top cricket regulating authority booked the Sri Lankan player based on the following clauses:
Article 2.4.7-Impairing or impeding the ACU’s ability to conduct any investigation, including hiding, altering, or destroying any records or other information that might be pertinent to the investigation, serve as evidence, or might help uncover evidence of corrupt behaviour as defined by the Anti-Corruption Code.
Article 1.7.4.1 – In the event that the alleged corrupt conduct is connected to one or more domestic matches as well as one or more international matches, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the relevant national cricket Federation(s) will decide jointly which of them will pursue legal action (and, if applicable, in what order) against any relevant participant for the alleged corrupt conduct. If no agreement is reached, the ICC will pursue legal action only for corrupt conduct related to the relevant domestic matches, and the National Cricket Federation(s) will only pursue legal action against any relevant participant for such behaviour.
Article 1.8.1: The International Criminal Court (ICC) shall prosecute any corrupt conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code. Considering one or more matches in the country and one or more matches abroad, then all References to “International Match” in the Anti-Corruption Code will be understood to be expanded to contain the pertinent “Domestic Match.”
Praveen Jayawickrama has so far appeared in fifteen international matches.
Speaking of this, left-arm spinner Jayawickrama made his debut for his country in 2021 and participated in five matches in each format.
