Cricket bat assault: Police arrest absconding man in playground feud

Police on Sunday apprehended a 30-year-old man who had used a cricket bat to beat two brothers. It’s noteworthy that the incident started as an argument about playground space. Mohammad Hashib, also known as Pappu Latif Raine, is the accused in this case. According to Bangur Nagar police authorities, he has been evading capture for about a year. It was noteworthy that the accused was reportedly hiding in Goregaon, Mumbai.

Dinesh Maruti Pachkale and his younger brother, Chandrashekar Pachkale, the victims of the case, were 21 and 22 years old, respectively. Chandrasekar works as a supervisor in the construction industry, whereas Dinesh is employed by a private company. Both brothers are reportedly residents of the Malad East region’s Sundar Nagar. On January 22, last year, the two were playing cricket in Shankarwadi’s Laxmi Park with their buddies. When a different group arrived at the same location at around five o’clock in the evening, they began playing in a different area of the field.

But after a while, Dinesh was approached by Hashib from the opposing gang, who had him leave the playing field. There was an argument as a result of Dinesh rejecting his request. Chandrasekar broke the silence between them at that moment in an attempt to resolve the issue. But following the dispute, three of Hashib’s buddies attacked the Pachkale brothers, and things quickly took a crazy turn. Having already been battered, Hashib joined the group and used a bat to thrash them both.

Dinesh was subsequently taken to the Parvati Chavan Hospital (Sai Clinic) for medical attention after suffering severe injuries to his head and chest. Unlike his older brother, Chandrasekar did not suffer any serious injuries, therefore he only required basic first aid, but Dinesh required admission to the hospital.

Following Dinesh’s complaint, the Bangur Nagar police took matters into their own hands and filed a First Investigation Report (FIR) against an unidentified accused person under sections 323, 324, and 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), according to Hindustan Times (HT). Section 324 is under the law’s provisions for committing riotous mischief, whereas Section 323 is linked to a purposeful attempt to harm someone. Finally, sections 307 and “attempt to commit murder.”

Police detain the accused following the initial court session.

While the inquiry was underway, authorities were able to identify Hashib and discovered that he had vanished after learning that a formal complaint had been filed against him following the incident. As a result, the police began a hunt and, on Sunday, January 19, 2025, after a year, they had him captured in Goregaon. The following day, the police brought him before the Borivali region’s local court following his detention. The hearing ended with Hashib being placed under police remand.
