Following their poor Ashes 2025–26 season, Kevin Pietersen has proposed that England think about replacing Brendon McCullum with former head coach Andy Flower. Following a crushing 1-4 series loss for England in Australia, McCullum’s future has come under investigation.
Both McCullum’s and captain Ben Stokes’ futures seem questionable as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) begins a thorough evaluation of the team’s performance. The much-discussed “Bazball” strategy may have reached its limit, according to Stokes himself, which may cause the ECB to look into other choices for the red-ball setup’s leadership.
Pietersen called the notion of Flower’s comeback “a wild thought,” but he thinks it might work.
According to him, the former captain of Zimbabwe has developed considerably as a coach and now has a solid knowledge of both Test cricket and contemporary cricket.
Although Pietersen and Flower had a tense relationship when they were both on the England squad, he said that a number of players have subsequently informed him that the current coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru has changed and is capable of managing the dynamics of the dressing room today.
“This idea is CRAZY. One of my wildest, I think. Given his transformation and alignment with contemporary players, is it possible for England to resurrect Andy Flower? He receives Test Cricket. Many players have told me that since our drama, he has changed his ways. He truly understands the current player because he is winning leagues. VERY ESSENTIAL! I know, wild! “Any thoughts?” Pietersen wrote on X.
This is a WILD thought. I reckon one of my wildest.
Can England bring back Andy Flower now that he’s changed and in line with the modern day player?
He gets Test Cricket.
I’ve been told by many players that he’s changed his ways since our drama.
He’s winning leagues so…— Kevin Pietersen🦏 (@KP24) January 9, 2026
During the 2010–11 series, Flower led England to a historic 3-1 Ashes triumph in Australia, capping off a very successful time as head coach. In addition to winning a historic Test series in India, England won their first-ever world title in the format in 2010 when they won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup under his direction.
Following the conclusion of his time as England’s coach in 2014, Flower became one of the most renowned coaches in franchise cricket. He has had a great deal of success in international T20 leagues, notably winning the 2021 Pakistan Super League (PSL) championship with Multan Sultans. Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their first Indian Premier League (IPL) championship under Flower’s leadership more recently. He has coached teams in the T10 and ILT20 competitions in addition to these accomplishments.
