Glenn Phillips will miss the rest of the 2025 Indian Premier League after suffering a groin injury while fielding for the Gujarat Titans (GT) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad on April 6. Phillips “returned to New Zealand” according to an IPL statement. GT, who currently lead the standings with four victories from five games, has not yet announced Phillips’ replacement.
After the fifth over of the SRH innings, Phillips, who never once made it into GT’s starting lineup, entered the game as a substitute outfield but had to limp off within minutes.
As Ishan Kishan and Nitish Kumar Reddy stole a quick single, he fielded the fourth ball of the over, which was bowled by Prasidh Krishna, and threw a throw to the wicketkeeper’s end. He immediately fell, grabbing his groin. During our live ball-by-ball analysis, we observed, “Looks like he might have pulled his groin while getting that throw away,”
With assistance from a few of the other members of the GT camp, he limped away prior to the subsequent delivery.
Before leaving home “to deal with an important personal matter” on April 3, Kagiso Rabada had previously been fired by GT. It’s unclear if and when he would be coming back. Rabada’s replacement had also not been announced by GT.
GT had only signed seven foreign players for the season; currently, they only have five. Rashid Khan, Sherfane Rutherford, and Jos Buttler have all played their games thus far. They also include South Africa’s quick bowler Gerald Coetzee and Afghanistan’s all-rounder Karim Janat. However, Coetzee is recovering from an injury that prevented him from playing in the Champions Trophy and SA20 earlier this year.
