PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi mull Gary Kirsten to discuss Babar Azam’s captaincy after Pakistan’s T20 World Cup failure

After the team’s miserable performances at the T20 World Cup 2024, Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has called white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten to discuss the team’s future.

After losing to both India and the United States in the group stages of the competition, Pakistan was eliminated. Additionally, they were forced to leave during the World Cup 2023 league stages, and their decision to name Babar Azam captain again was ineffective.

Following Pakistan’s flight from New York to home during the tournament, Naqvi asked Kirsten and Wahab Riaz to provide a report on the occasion. Fans and former Pakistani cricket players have been extremely agitated due to the team’s ongoing struggles, and Babar’s captaincy has also come under scrutiny. Naqvi stated prior to the summons that they had not spoken about the top batter’s potential as captain.

However, no decision on Babar Azam has been made as of yet. Geo News cited Naqvi as saying, “I’m only speaking to those former cricketers who are interested in the betterment of Pakistan cricket.”

Wasim Akram, a former Pakistani bowler who was commentating on the T20 World Cup, took a harsh stance against the team following defeats to the United States and India. In particular, Pakistan needed to place Mohammad Rizwan on strike with seven overs and eight wickets remaining during the match against India, needing to nearly run a ball. After losing by six runs in the end, Akram criticised the squad for playing with the emotions of the entire nation.
