According to reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to ensure that India travels to Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy if Pakistan travels to India for the upcoming ODI World Cup, which will be held in India.
Reportedly, the ultimatum was presented to ICC Chairman Greg Barclay and chief executive Geoff Allardice. The PCB recently threatened to boycott the impending ODI World Cup after the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) refused to travel to Pakistan in September 2023 for the Asia Cup 2023.
The hosting rights drama for the 2023 Asia Cup has been ongoing for several months. Due to the absence of plausible solutions, a final decision on the matter has not yet been reached.
In addition, the BCCI reportedly rejected the hybrid format of the Asia Cup proposed by the PCB. The hybrid model stipulated that India would play their tournament matches at a neutral venue; additionally, the quarterfinal games were allegedly proposed to be played at a neutral venue.
PCB has requested a formal assurance from the ICC that India will travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. This request comes after the BCCI’s rejection of the hybrid model.
According to multiple reports, a definitive decision on the matter could be made at upcoming ICC board meetings. Nevertheless, given the BCCI’s control over the global cricket economy, it is possible that Pakistan will contemplate forfeiting its matches in the upcoming World Cup, which are scheduled for the latter stages of 2023.
