India’s Super Over finish is dramatic.
The 27-year-old batsman reached his first T20I century in just 52 balls while in outstanding form. His final score, which included seven fours and six sixes, was an incredible 107 from 58 deliveries. In the process, Pathum Nissanka became the player with the most 50-plus scores in the tournament’s history, breaking Virat Kohli’s record. He also surpassed Tillakaratne Dilshan’s 104 to become Sri Lanka’s greatest individual scorer in the format.
Pathum Nissanka defeated Rana in his innings, scoring 34 runs off of just 15 pacer deliveries. Throughout the chase, his 127-run partnership with Kusal Perera (58 off 32) kept the team ahead.
Prior to this, Abhishek Sharma’s 61, Tilak Varma’s 49*, and Sanju Samson’s lightning-fast 39 helped India reach 202/5. Despite frequent wickets taken by Sri Lanka’s bowlers, India’s batting made sure they reached the 200-mark.
In response, thanks to Pathum Nissanka and Perera, Sri Lanka remained in the hunt the entire time.
Varun Chakravarthy caught Nissanka at short fine leg on the first ball after Rana removed her with 12 needed from the last over. Dasun Shanaka put up a strong fight, but Sri Lanka was only able to square the score at 202/5, forcing a Super Over.
Unexpectedly, the island nation decided against sending their in-form centurion, Nissanka, to the Super Over. Rather, Dasun Shanaka and Kusal Perera left, followed by Kamindu Mendis. Arshdeep Singh bowled well, giving up just two runs while dismissing Shanaka and Perera. Wanindu Hasaranga’s opening ball was hammered through the infield by Suryakumar Yadav in response, and he and Shubman Gill sprinted three to give India the victory.
