The visitors led by 145 runs at the beginning of the day at 141/6. Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja were the overnight hitters that got things going. Australian captain Pat Cummins got rid of the former in the third over of the day. Before it nestled into Alex Carey’s gloves, he bowled a delivery that took the outside edge and shaped away late.
India lost their last four wickets for a mere 16 runs on Sunday, January 5, in the fifth and final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the storied Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), giving them a disappointing start to Day 3.
After a few overs, Pat Cummins once again joined in, and Sundar was out.
Sundar was looking to defend when the right-arm seamer bowled a ball that angled in massively and went between his bat and pad, aiming for the stumps.
The onus was on the tail-enders to increase India’s lead as much as possible by scoring some vital runs. But to finish the Indian innings, Scott Boland showed up and took out Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. Boland bowled outside off-stump in the channel and took Siraj’s wicket. Usman Khawaja received the outside edge of the delivery after the Hyderabad pacer prodded it with the slip cordon.
The final Indian batter to be removed was Bumrah. He was out clean bowled after attempting a reckless slog that entirely missed the ball’s line. Only 157 runs were scored by India in 39.5 overs. They jumped out to a 161 lead in the second inning.
In 16.5 overs, Boland finished with outstanding figures of 6/45. With a three-for at the finish, Cummins provided him with excellent support. Beau Webster, meanwhile, contributed by taking Shubman Gill’s lone wicket on Day 2.
Here’s a look at how ‘X’ users reacted to India’s collapse on Day 3:

Sloppy start by India, tired after a long series. Plenty of freebies to get Australia going. Looking like 3-1 incoming – Scott Boland with a great performance #AUSvIND

WTC scenarios
Australia: They qualify for the finals vs South Africa.
India win: India stays alive & Australia will need at least one win in Sri Lanka.
If either of the above results happens, Sri Lanka stand eliminated.#INDvsAUS #INDvsAUSTest— Aagam (@AagammOk) January 5, 2025
