Despite Sam Konstas’ subpar performance thus far in the current Test series between Australia and the West Indies, Australian captain Pat Cummins has voiced confidence in his skills. Konstas, who is 19 years old, has only scored 33 runs overall in the four innings that he has played in thus far.
For Cummins, Konstas was ‘good enough’ for the demands of Test cricket. Additionally, he gave the young player some pointers to remember when he bats the next time he has the chance.
He’s been good, you see. Anyone just starting out in Test cricket, in my opinion, is kind of picked for a purpose.
According to India Today, Pat Cummins said, “We know he’s good enough.”
“Don’t get too caught up in feeling like the biggest thing in the world every inning,” he added, adding that for a batter, it can be where are your scoring zones and what tempo you typically operate at your best.
The Australian captain said that the rookie opener should be given more time and tolerance. In the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the top-order batsman made his debut and got off to a promising start. In his first innings against a far more seasoned Indian bowling attack, he scored a quick fifty. But since that specific Melbourne game, Konstas has found it difficult to be consistent.
In the middle against the West Indians, he has appeared quite cautious. While strike-rate isn’t a problem in red-ball cricket, the ace batsman will be looking to improve his performance when Australia plays the West Indies in the last game of the three-match series at Sabina Park in Jamaica. The 33 runs have come in as many as 93 deliveries.
The Cummins-led team will enter that game with an insurmountable 0–2 lead. They prevailed by 159 and 133 runs, respectively, in the series’ opening and second games. Before proceeding to the 20-over portion of the multi-format tour, they will be eager to finish a series thumping of the hosts.
