Our father has trained us to score big: Musheer Khan

Musheer Khan, who is 19 years old, was instrumental in helping India B escape a precarious situation during the Duleep Trophy 2024 first round. In addition to calming the ship, his 181-run innings heralded his presence on the grand stage. The Mumbai native expressed gratitude to his father Naushad Khan for his many impressive innings.

Against a disciplined India A bowling assault, the star-studded India B squad, which included players like Sarfaraz Khan and Yashasvi Jaiswal, found themselves in serious danger at 94/7. With their destructive speed, Avesh Khan, Akash Deep, and Khaleel Ahmed had placed India B on the back foot.

Sarfaraz’s brother Musheer Khan came through for his squad when they needed him most.

In the difficult part of the innings, especially in the second session when India B lost five wickets, he supported the team. “We have been trained by our father to aim high; for us, 150 marks the beginning of our century. When we hit that mark, he urged us to play our shots. We have to stay at the wicket and play the entire day. And we’re really thirsty for runs,” Musheer stated, according to a Cricket.com report.

After reaching his half-century mark, the all-rounder started to counterattack alongside Navdeep Saini. He took bold smashes down the ground at his Mumbai colleague, spinner Tanush Kotian, and made a spectacular century on his Duleep Trophy debut.

Day 2 saw the young batter pick up steam in his innings as he calmly played both front- and back-foot smashes against the pacers. His cool-headed but calculated attitude made the pairing work, as he helped India B climb from a hazardous 94/7 to a more respectable 269/7. Reaching an unbroken 175 runs, the combination with Saini nearly surpassed the Duleep Trophy record for the best eighth wicket stand.

With a comfortable double off Kuldeep Yadav, Musheer reached 150. He raised his bat in celebration and received a ‘stay cool and keep batting’ signal from his brother in the dressing room. At last, Khan finished his innings with 181 runs from 373 balls.
