OTD 2006: A spectacular hat-trick against Pakistan propels Irfan Pathan onto the scene

On January 29, 2006, a teenage Irfan Pathan stunned Pakistan with a brilliant hat-trick, showcasing his talent in the world of cricket. The first two Tests of India’s tour to Pakistan ended in a tie. In the third, everything was set up for an outcome and a chance to win the series. The visitors chose to field first after winning the toss, which gave Pathan the ideal opportunity to show off his skill.

Irfan Pathan, who was assigned to bowl the opening over of the match, was a young player who went on to take three wickets in a row to complete a magnificent hat-trick on the last three balls of the over.

Pathan’s lethal strike claimed the lives of Mohammad Yousuf, Younis Khan, and Salman Butt. Butt was hit by a remarkable outswinger that ended up in Virender Sehwag’s clutches.

Younis Khan’s powerful in-swinger completely destroyed the middle stump. On the other hand, Mohammad Yousuf, having been duped by the teenage pacer, had the bails from the stump flying.

Despite Pathan’s efforts, India was not able to win.

Irfan Pathan finished the game’s first innings with five wickets after scoring a hat-trick. Zaheer Khan scored two runs, and RP Singh claimed three wickets. In the first innings, India restricted Pakistan to 245 runs.

The team answered with 238 runs in return. With 45 runs scored, Yuvraj Singh was India’s top run scorer. In addition, Irfan Pathan put 40 runs on the board. With the intention of extending their lead, Pakistan demonstrated outstanding batting performance.

Imran Farhat and Salman Butt scored 53 and 57 runs, respectively, to start the innings. Faisal Iqbal scored 139 runs in 220 deliveries, while Younis Khan added 77 runs to the score. Pakistan declared a 599-run total and set a target of 607 runs to win the match.

Team India, though, was unable to take a significant risk and pursue the objective. Although Yuvraj Singh scored a strong 122 runs, India lost the match by 341 runs as the remaining batters failed to contribute significantly.
