Trophy for the Men's One-Day Cup to recognise former great

From the 2024–25 season onwards, Cricket Australia (CA) is requesting the help of supporters in naming the men’s domestic One-Day Cup trophy in recognition of a former great Australian cricket player.

In order to determine which past player should be rewarded, CA will start accepting suggestions and promoting conversation among supporters, players, State and Territory Associations, community clubs, and the media today and leading up to the season that begins on September 22.

Unlike the Women’s National Cricket League’s Ruth Preddy Cup or Sheffield Shield, the Men’s One-Day Cup trophy is given out each season and has no official name.

There is a lengthy number of deserving contenders for the everlasting trophy, including Steve and Mark Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, Michael Bevan, Matthew Hayden, Dean Jones, Darren Lehmann, Brad Hodge, and Ricky Ponting.

Before revealing the official trophy name ahead of the championship match, CA will disclose a short list of finalists during the first round of the competition and welcome additional feedback from the cricket community.

Important requirements consist of:

• A superior track record in the Men’s One-Day Domestic division.

• One of Australia’s best players in men’s one-day cricket at the international level.

• A player who has become synonymous with the 50-over format; that is, a player who has significantly influenced the game via performance and by motivating changes to the way the format is played.

CA’s Chief of Cricket, James Allsopp, stated:

One-Day cricket is a rich tradition in Australia, and the competition has produced teams and players that have inspired countless cricket fans throughout the years.

Another chance for Australian cricket to celebrate the memory of its former players and forge stronger bonds between current and former players is to rename the One-Day Domestic Cup in memory of one of our greats.

“We know that whoever the trophy is named after in perpetuity will be thoroughly deserving of the honour, as One-Day cricket has produced so many legends.”
